ABSTRACT

Lacquer is a kind of resin widely used in antiseptic preparations and antirust paint. It is an important traditional nontimber forest product in China. The most common lacquer resin is harvested from Toxicodendron vernicifluum Barkley, a tree from the family Anacardiaceae. Because T. vernicifluum is poisonous, it is usually cultivated on dry terraces and uplands where it is far from food crops. The Lemo are unique as the only ethnic group that propagates lacquer trees in their swidden fields following an agroforestry approach.
