ABSTRACT

The northern midlands and highlands of Vietnam consist of 15 provinces covering an area of 182,965 km2 and populated by 12.9 million people. The highlands are classified as those mountain areas with an average altitude above 600 m above sea level (asl) and the midlands are mountain areas below 600 m. The climate of the area is characterized by yearly average temperatures of 19°C to 23°C, humidity of 78% to 83%, and 1,300 to 2,300 mm of annual rainfall.
