ABSTRACT

This remarkable thermodynamic equality postulates that an equilibrium free energy difference (AG) can be recovered by using Boltzmann-weighted averaging (denoted by brackets) of non-equilibrium work values (W)); thus, Jarzynski equality opens up the possibility of obtaining equilibrium energy values from experiments that involve energy dissipation along non-equilibrium pathways. The Jarzynski equality has only recently been introduced into the force spectroscopy realm [89] and it is yet unclear whether it will provide a robust solution for interpretation of CFM data.
