ABSTRACT

This chapter deals with some beneficial as well as harmful effects related, in the broader sense, to glycoconjugates and particularly to the enzymes involved in their synthesis and metabolism with the focus mainly on glycosaminoglycans (GAGs), mucins, glycosphingolipids (GSLs), and lipoglycans. Insofar as these glycoconjugates are related to diseases, strategies for their healing, including the employment of pharmacological chaperons and inhibitors, will be discussed too. For a more general review of this topic see Ohtsubo and Marth (2006).
