ABSTRACT

Robocup is one of the largest scientific robotic initiatives, aimed

at developing robotics and spreading it in society. It is organized

in different leagues, which organize competitions among robots,

most of which are autonomous. Some leagues involve teams of

autonomous robots that have to cooperate to win a soccer game

against an opponent team. Given the aims of this book, in this

chapter we will focus on these leagues, where cooperation among

robots is crucial. We will consider issues such as cooperative

sensing, cooperative behavior, and team strategy. We discuss some

of the ways Robocup teams have faced these issues, and we will

envision the application of these techniques in industrial and

service robotics, nowadays and in a next future. We will also

show how Robocup can be considered a challenging and engaging

environment, stimulating the development of techniques than can

be used to face also real-world applications.
