ABSTRACT

Ion exchange materials protect nature and man from the harmful effects of heavy metals. These materials are used in agriculture, industry, wastewater treatment, purification of aqueous solutions, analytical chemistry, medicine, and pharmacology. This book presents a comprehensive overview of heavy metal ions sorption carried out with ion-exchange materials of polysaccharide nature using modern methods of research. Cellulose materials are the most common: affordable and biodegradable with practically unlimited renewability. This book covers the modification of cellulose materials and the introduction of chelating groups into their structure to produce a new generation of sorption materials.

TABLE OF CONTENTS

An Introduction. Biosorbents of cellulosic nature: general concepts. Methods of studying of sorbents properties. Using of polysaccharide materials for extraction of heavy metal ions from aqueous solutions. Kinetics of heavy metal ions sorption from aqueous solutions on polysaccharide polymer materials. The equilibrium of heavy metal ions sorption on cellulose-containing biopolymer materials. Modification of biopolymers using physical, physico-chemical methods. Modification of biopolymers, using chemical and biochemical methods. The effect of temperature on the kinetics and thermodynamics of of heavy metal ions distribution in a heterophase system "biosorbent - aqueous solution". Effect of pH on sorption process. Influence of concentration of the metal ions with a charge of 1+, 2+, and 3+. Non-exchange sorption of heavy metal salts from aqueous solutions. Substantiation of the mechanism of metal ions binding with polydentate sorption centers and physico-chemical basis of their sorption from aqueous media with polysaccharide sorbents. Prospects for use of polysaccharide materials for sorption of heavy metal ions from aqueous media in production processes. Conclusion.
