ABSTRACT
Challenging the orthodox view that European integration is eroding national identity, this groundbreaking volume links identity, citizenship and democratic legitimacy in a unique way by focusing on key themes: ¢ the suggestion that the EMU project is much more than an economic enterprise: it will invade national sovereignty and destroy cherished national symbols. ¢ relating assertive regional and ethnic identities to evolving concepts of EU citizenship and a European identity. ¢ the danger the whole European project may be in if a genuine EU-level citizenship is not created.
