ABSTRACT

Lord Ralf Dahrendorf was born in Hamburg, Germany and received doctorates in philosophy (Hamburg) and sociology (London). He has had a distinguished career in academia, having served as professor at various universities and as director of the London School of Economics, and in public service as member of Parliament in Germany, Commissioner of the then European Economic Community in Brussels, and member of the House of Lords in London. He has been a pioneer in the study of how social classes affect human behaviour and on the relationship between civil society and liberty. His publications include After 1989: Morals, Revolution, and Civil Society and The Modern Social Conflict.
