ABSTRACT

Upon the death of her husband, financier Russell Sage, New York-born Margaret Olivia Slocum Sage used her inherited funds to become an active philanthropist and, during her lifetime, contributed over US $75m. to various causes. In 1907, she established the Russell Sage Foundation with an endowment of $10m. She also made substantial gifts to major institutions such as Harvard and Yale Universities and the Young Women’s Christian Association. In 1910 she funded a new campus for Emma Willard School, and in 1916 she converted the old campus to the Russell Sage College, which provides vocational instruction for women.
