ABSTRACT

This term is used to describe an ideology challenging the existing social

order and providing a model of a more desirable future. It outlines how

this future might be achieved, and how change can be brought about. At

this ideology’s foundation is a view of nature that is non-hierarchical, such

that the world works as an interconnected whole. As such it stands in stark

contrast with most environmentalist perspectives that tend to be anthropo-

centric. Ecologism adopts an ecocentric standpoint that accords priority

to nature and the planet as a whole, with humans constituting one part

of it.
