ABSTRACT

This chapter looks at some of the controversial topics/areas that tomorrow’s leaders will face. Institutional leaders are being caught in the middle and they must be careful in determining what is free speech and therefore permitted on campus because it is a free speech issue, as opposed to what is university-endorsed speech, which represents the values, beliefs, and morals of the institution. Institutional leaders need to pay attention to elementary and secondary enrollments in their target markets; there should be no surprises when the number of students graduating changes. In the environment it has become important for institutional leaders to understand how external factors influence enrollments. Decentralized budget models like Responsibility Centered Management require senior leaders to give more authority and power to those beneath them in the hierarchy. Administrators and faculty need to use their power and leadership to influence the use of technology to create more efficient and effective practices on campuses.
