ABSTRACT
In the literature reviewed at the beginning of this book, I demonstrated that the overwhelming image of later life widowhood has been one of loneliness and loss. I then argued that this was a restrictive, one-dimensional image that took no account of either individual or collective biography. I have suggested instead a more complex, multi-dimensional model of widowhood grounded in individual and collective biography and comprising numerous components. In this final part of what I have described in previous chapters as a jigsaw, I further challenge the uniformity of a one-dimensional image of later life widowhood, by exploring the multiple narratives emerging from the stories each participant told about her life now, as an older widow. As in previous chapters, I explore both the subjective experience and the factors that contribute to identity in later life widowhood and, where appropriate, links are made to previous chapters.
