ABSTRACT

This conclusion presents some closing thoughts on the concepts discussed in the preceding chapters of this book. The book is a testament to those queer and transgender activists and ordinary citizens who put their lives on the line to wrong the queer wrongs around us, whose bravery in calling out the wrongs progresses into action. In a cyclically retracting and expanding global community, queer rights are once again under threat. As the history of social and political justice efforts have taught us across generations, hard-won human rights can be rolled back in a fraction of the time takes to gain them. Despite many families now responding more compassionately to their queer and transgender kids coming out, transgender youth suicide is on the rise and anti-LGBTIQ violence and bullying in schools remains a global concern. Lesbian novelist and cultural critic Sarah Schulman is one who has warned the queer community against the seduction of 'mainstreaming'.
