ABSTRACT

Zamyatin, Evgeny Ivanovich (1884–1937) Born in Lebedyon, Russia, he was educated at the St. Petersburg Polytechnic Institute in naval engineering (1902–1908), after which he worked as an engineer until 1911. He then lectured at the Institute, edited various journals, and went into exile in Paris in 1932, where he died. He began publishing stories as a student, and these include the novella and short stories in The Dragon (1913, trans. 1966), A Godforsaken Hole (1914, trans. 1988), which depicts military life as drunken and corrupt, and The Islanders (1922, trans. 1985), which offers a devastating assessment of English life.
