Occupancy is the number of units or square feet occupied compared with the total units or square feet available. Usually this is expressed as a percentage of the whole. An investor who intends to purchase an apartment complex, office building, or shopping center will want to know the current and past percentages of occupancy for the property. The historical trend of occupancy will provide an investor with an occupancy pattern to determine existing or past problems that may be corrected to increase occupancy.
