ABSTRACT

Times to failure in arbitrary units (au) were acquired in rolling contact fatigue of hardened steel specimens. Ten independent observations were made at each of four values of loading stress. The failure times were obtained using a 4-ball rolling contact test rig [1,2]. It appears that the steel specimens were ball bearings [1,3]. The study [1] followed the customary practice of assuming that (1) the failure data were described by a two-parameter Weibull model and (2) the Weibull shape parameter (β) was invariant with stress [3]. The data appeared to have satisfied these assumptions [1]. Engineering experience indicated that the failures should have a two-parameter Weibull description [2].
