This chapter deals with the events of the year 590 (1193-1194) in the lifetime of Ibn al-Athir. It gives an account of the conflict between Shihab al-Din and the Indian king of Benares, and discusses the killing of Sultan Tughril, Khwarazm Shah’s conquest of Rayy, and the death of his brother Sultan Shah. After the defeat of the Hindus, Shihab al-Din entered Benares territory and carried away 1,400 loads of treasure. At the end of Ramadan 589 Sultan Shah died. Having heard of his death, Khwarazm Shah immediately proceeded to Marv and took control there. The chapter describes how the caliph’s vizier went to Khuzistan and took it, and al-‘Aziz’s siege of Damascus. Miscellaneous events during the year include an earthquake during Rabi‘ I in the Jazira, Iraq.
