ABSTRACT

CHRONIC RENAL FAILURE Chronic renal failure (chronic kidney disease) can cause xerostomia, halitosis/taste disturbance, leukoplakia, dental hypoplasia in children, renal osteodystrophy and a bleeding tendency (especially if anticoagulated) ( Figs 1.12.1-1.12.3 ). Furred tongue may be seen in patients on haemodialysis and dental and periodontal health is poor and deteriorates on dialysis. Uraemia and uraemic stomatitis, foetor/halitosis and frosting have been described in end-stage renal disease. Xerostomia can be prominent especially in patients on haemodialysis. Peritoneal dialysis appears to predispose to tuberculous cervical lymphadenitis.
