ABSTRACT
The Spanish government, by a royal cedule dated 1652, suspended all military expeditions against the Indians of Cumana. At the same time, eight missionaries of the order of St. Francis, under father Juan de Mendoza, were dispatched to convert the Indians: they landed at Cumana in May, 1656.
