ABSTRACT

The Canary Islands, part of Spain, lie off the north-western coast of Africa. They have a total area of 7,300 square kilometres (2,800 square miles), and a population of over 1,500,000 people. The main settlement, Las Palmas, with some 400,000 inhabitants, is the eighth largest town in Spain. In spite of their location, the islands receive the radio and television broadcasts of the national station, Radio-television Espanola, and are also served by a number of local commercial radio stations.
