ABSTRACT

As part of a science project, a class used ‘physical theatre’ to illustrate the way materials can change state from solid to liquid and to gas. Groups of students simulated the activity of particles in a mystery element as the teacher ‘heated them up’ or ‘cooled them down’. When cooled down, they clustered tensely together as a solid; when warmed up, they fell to the ground and wriggled like a liquid; and warmed further, they spaced out and leapt around to simulate a gas.
