ABSTRACT

Investigating how nearly 100 billion neurons of the human central nervous system function is one of the outstanding achievements in all of 20th-century science. This chapter introduces research on the central nervous system, composed of the brain and spinal cord, and the peripheral nervous system, which extends the operation of the brain throughout the entire body. Together these two systems provide interactive feedback loops that are ultimately responsible for the behavior of the organism in relation to sensory inputs from the environment.
