ABSTRACT

The inauguration of Open Ad missions was the rationale for establishing the Office of Academic Advising, which opened for business in September 1971. The office staff recruited a few replacements for the advisers from the faculty, but also looked for other ways, to staff the office. Academic Advising offered them two-year paid assistantships, and they gave us a measure of the consistency and stability we needed as a service organization. The academic advisers worked with the students during their first term on probation, since their problems might well be more academic in nature. Each Freshman Seminar has a student assistant who helps in teaching the course, and advising assistants naturally become knowledgeable about the college’s academic program and rules and regulations. Academic advising is recognized as an important function in the college, not only for Open Admissions students, but for all students.
