ABSTRACT

The chapter begins with a brief discussion of the exiting research on the capabilities approach within the education. The main purpose of the chapter is to present a theoretical rationale and the conceptualisation of access for success using the capabilities approach, which proves particularly helpful for tackling the complexities of the diversity, inequality and social justice within the domain of the university access. From a philosophy of the education angle, Saito explores the links between the capabilities approach and education, then concludes her theoretical paper with a call for the educationists to explore the new possibilities that capabilities based analyses open up. The voices of the learners and the students help us to interrogate the theoretical conceptualisation presented in this chapter, so moving towards a more practical and actionable capabilities-based framework in pursuit of social justice in the terrain of access and transition to university.
