ABSTRACT

Thorough accident investigations should be conducted following any accident that occurs, whether the incident occurred on company premises or on the road. Accident investigations will help in determining the factors that contributed to the accident. Though it is not a comfortable item to perform, corrective action is often a necessary follow-up to accident investigations where it is determined that an employee committed an unsafe act. The corrective action is designed to change the behavior of an employee who has committed an unsafe act, so it should be executed in a positive manner. In the event that the behavior does not change and unsafe acts or inappropriate behavior continue, additional corrective actions should be given, ultimately building toward a point determined by the employer at which the employee will be suspended or terminated. Consistency is an issue that can become difficult with regard to accident investigations and corrective action.
