In working with clients on issues related to belonging, the therapist needs to account for the very real ways in which the client may not belong. This process of accounting needs to begin with the therapist's own process. Stop reading right now and take a few moments to re¯ect upon the relative importance of issues of difference for clients, and the signi®cance of your own cultural, ethnic and class background, your gender, sexuality, physical and intellectual ability, your economic status and how these factors shape your identity, your relationships and interactions and your sense of self.
