ABSTRACT

Domestic and international contributions to Community-Based Organisations (CBOs) and Voluntary Organisations (VOs) in India grew steadily in the last decade, positively infl uencing the scope and effectiveness of result-oriented development, especially in rural areas. However, several factors constrain the optimisation of this growth, in particular problems with donors. For example, although charitable giving in the United States totalled around $250 billion in the fi nancial year 2002, CBOs in the state of Maharashtra in western India could not muster more than $25 millionaround one hundredth of 1 percent of this total pie.
