ABSTRACT

This chapter presents organizational sustainability through a systems lens, emphasizing how the actions of an organization extend beyond its own organizational boundaries into the ecology of organizations. We draw on literature from macroergonomics, human systems integration, and organizational behavior to propose a model with distal and proximal antecedents to predict sustainability in organizations. This model highlights the importance of macro (e.g., climate, leadership) and micro (e.g., interface design) determinants to sustainable performance. To illustrate the systems concepts and the model described in the chapter, we present a brief organizational case that embodies many of the concepts described in the proposed sustainability model.
