ABSTRACT

Nowadays, active and intelligent packaging is of increasing interest. It has been recognized and adopted to the agricultural, food and pharmaceutical industries. This chapter firstly defines the active and intelligent packaging concepts. Secondly, the present literature review outlines the active packaging including oxygen scavenging, moisture regulating, carbon dioxide generating and scavenging, ethylene scavenging and blocking, antimicrobial packaging, and antioxidant packaging, as well as thermally equilibrious modified atmosphere packaging. Thirdly, the chapter reviews the intelligent packaging including integrity indicator, freshness indicator, and time-temperature indicator, as well as radio frequency identification. The chapter then provides future trends to complete the chapter.
