Additive Models and Models with Interactions

Section 4.1 presents additive models represented as mixed linear models. This is another class of models with an extensive literature and as with penalized splines, additive models can be fit into the mixed-linear-model representation by representing them as sums of penalized splines at the price of sacrificing some techniques in that extensive literature, although this pruning appears to sacrifice little if any modeling power.
