ABSTRACT

First published in Leigh Hunt’s London Journal, I, 2 April 1834, p. 1. Leigh Hunt’s London Journal carried the motto To Assist the Inquiring, Animate the Struggling, and Sympathize with All, and was published weekly from 2 April 1834 to 27 May 1835. Financial difficulties then forced a merger with Charles Knight’s Printing Machine, edited by George Lillie Craik (1798– 1866; DNB). In this new form, Leigh Hunt’s London Journal and the Printing Machine was published from 6 June 1835 to 31 December 1835. Hunt was almost entirely responsible for writing and editing his London Journal. After the merger, he appears to have shared the editorial duties with Craik, but continued to supply most of the original material.
