ABSTRACT

Remedial options are available that can prevent reinforcement corrosion initiation, that can slow the rate of reinforcement corrosion and, in some limited cases, stop corrosion of reinforcement. For reinforcement corrosion-induced deterioration, a condition survey and representative testing will enable determination of where corrosion is occurring together with information regarding the causes of corrosion. One means of deciding the most appropriate remediation approach(s) for a reinforcement corrosion affected structure is to present a scenario analysis of concrete repair and protection options to a structure owner. The corrosion rate of reinforcement in concrete very much depends on the environment conditions, cementitious materials composition, the concrete quality and the thickness of cover concrete. To determine the time for the corrosion propagation period, two major parameters need to be determined. One is the critical criterion for deterioration damage by reinforcement corrosion. The other is the corrosion rate of reinforcement in various conditions.
