ABSTRACT

This chapter provides an overview of contemporary policies and issues that may influence the design and provision of contemporary schools in Africa. It draws on the author’s research findings from being involved in the EdQual Project as part of a University of Bristol-led research consortium researching educational quality in emerging countries. EdQual involved researching how improvements could be made to educational quality in the emerging world.

The chapter explores further alternative methods of pedagogy such as digital learning and possibilities of developing peer-to-peer learning and virtual classrooms. It then goes on to consider how these new teaching practices may ultimately change the conceptualisation of the school classroom. This is likely to change its terminology to the 'learning space' and also its situatedness in traditional classroom design standards to a more fluid use of available space within different community contexts.
