ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the aspects in the context of psychologically relevant dimensions of aging, and provides guidance for the psychologist who assesses and/or treats aging aviators. Federal legislation prohibits age discrimination in the workplace. The 1967 Age Discrimination in Employment Act prohibits persons over the age of 40 from being subject to workplace discrimination solely on the basis of age. Mounting pressure in the international arena lent added pressure to change the United States Age 60 Rule. Various countries such as Canada, Australia, and New Zealand lifted mandatory retirement ages consistent with their countries' laws prohibiting age discrimination. There are aeromedically relevant conditions associated with all the major organs of the body which may develop with advancing age. The chapter discusses the neurocognitive changes associated with aging and mitigating factors which have been demonstrated as relevant to aviation competence.
