ABSTRACT

The opening chapter of this book explores the aims of Physical Education as a subject – what actually is PE? And why is it an important subject within a student’s secondary school education? These questions have been answered in two ways; Outlining the aims of the National Curriculum for PE and the general outcomes which are products of an effective PE programme within schools. This chapter also highlights how PE and School Sport can contribute to whole-school aims and values, and practical ways teachers can ensure PE remains at the ‘heart’ of a school.
