ABSTRACT

The International Civil Aviation Organization has set out basic requirements for air navigation service providers to: prevent collisions between aircraft, prevent collisions between aircraft, vehicles and obstructions on the ground manoeuvring area, and expedite and maintain an orderly flow of air traffic. Depending on airport complexity, these may have air traffic control officers managing: air arrivals, departures, ground movement controller, release/delivery. Usually control aircraft about 60 miles to 5–6 miles out and altitude 24,000 ft to 6000 ft before handover to tower or visual control room for inbound aircraft or area controller for outbound. Workstation has at least two visual display units, keyboard/mouse/touch screen/bench top. Task analysis required for posture, neck rotation, standing/sitting for prolonged periods, upper and lower limbs for use of mouse/keyboard/touch screens/foot-pedals. Early identification by supervisors and open communication with aeromedical professionals is key to returning or maintaining operational fitness.
