ABSTRACT

This chapter analyses the relationship between Algeria and Western Sahara, looking into the factors that explain their connection and the reasons why ties have remained so strong. Undoubtedly, without Algeria’s support, colonial interests, bolstered by the hegemonic powers would have prevailed. This leads one to ponder how Algeria has succeeded in preventing outside powers, mainly France, from imposing their own political interests, resulting in a stalemate, but not in Western powers’ victory. Through extensive interviews, the authors provide an assessment of the attitudes that Sahrawis have about Algeria.
