ABSTRACT

Lucy Mercer Rutherfurd lay awake most of the night of Wednesday, April 11, 1945, in the guesthouse of the Little White House in Warm Springs, Georgia. Worry about the health of the man she once yearned to marry, Franklin Delano Roosevelt, now the thirty-second President of the United States, kept her from sleeping. She knew the look of death; she had become a widow just the previous year.
