ABSTRACT
Hitler regarded the Nagykanizsa oilfields, just to the southwest of Lake Balaton, as the most strategically vital area on the Eastern Front. His order of priority was demonstrated in the way the German forces were deployed in January and February 1945. Out of the eighteen precious Panzer divisions on the Eastern Front, seven were fighting in Hungary, two in Kurland, four in East Prussia and only five on the Berlin axis.
