ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the academic life histories and identity development of two Latina higher education staff members, Sofia Arenas and Isabella Torres-Bello. Higher education campuses across the United States and around the world are attempting to diversify their faculty and staff to better reflect the racial, ethnic, and language backgrounds of their students. Staff of color state they often feel exhausted from continually needing to prove their knowledge, skills, and abilities while scrutinized by their supervisors, colleagues, and students. Analyses also were deductive as she read the patterns of data in relation to a research literature describing and analyzing the experiences of staff of color in predominantly White institutions of higher education. Until that time when there are more staff of color populating higher education, and a more diverse student population, dilemmas like the ones narrated by Sofia and Isabella will prevail.
