ABSTRACT

Against this background, we can turn to the evidences of nationalistic bias detected in the textbooks of the two nations as their authors describe the War of 1812. This will reveal that American writers can be inspired to patriotic fervour by a minor as by a major war, and that bias by omission or com mission is to be found in most of their accounts. And it will show that English authors, by paying too scant attention to the War of 1812, have failed to provide their readers with a meaningful story of a conflict that was to influence the world of the future, including Great Britain itself and its imperial world.
