ABSTRACT

This chapter provides guidance on how to analyse data using thematic analysis and offers real research examples for researchers to consider. It also provides examples from real research to demonstrate how to conduct and write up qualitative analyses. The process of thematic analysis involves applying brief verbal descriptions to the data, known as coding. Thematic analysis is one of the most commonly used methods of qualitative data analysis, and is not dependent on specific theory or approaches to data collection. Broadly, all methods of transcription may be classed as either naturalism, where every utterance and pause is transcribed, or denaturalism, where pauses are removed, grammar corrected and even non-standard accents standardised. Transcription is the process of transferring recordings into written form and there are a variety of methods of transcribing audio and visual recordings, although generally these methods are more fully documented and better developed for audio recordings.
