ABSTRACT

The pulse-width modulation (PWM) technique using thyristors and gate turn-off thyristor switches is a popular method for controlling output DC voltage/current from a fixed supply in a lossless manner. There are many schemes for attaining such control, encompassing numerous application areas such as traction, uninterruptible power supply, and voltage regulators. This chapter discusses the response of an ideal chopper-fed system by Walsh domain analysis. It deals with the study of a first-order and a second-order system where the driving function is a single pulse, a pulse pair, or an alternating pulse pair. The method is extended to the analysis and simulation of a PWM chopper feeding an RL load. A square wave of certain amplitude, width, and frequency is defined as a pulse train. A single-pulse input is therefore just a single square pulse having a certain amplitude and width.
