ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on the analysis of the core date presented in the previous chapter. It gathers the lists into a series of groups based on form of engagement or the source of the lists. YouVersion’s list of popular Bible verses from 2013 to 2018 is explored in some depth as the concept of ‘extensive’ and ‘intensive’ engagement is developed. ‘Extensive’ relates to information gathering or information consuming forms of engagement (searching/reading/listening); ‘intensive’ is related to more complex user engagement with Bible verses such as bookmarking, highlighting, liking, annotating or sharing on their own social feed. This analysis is repeated across different groups of lists, noting the frequency of both ‘therapeutic’ and propositional’ verses, noting a gradual move towards the latter across both time and intensity of engagement. It is noted, however, that social sharing of verses says something about the user’s own performance of faith and tends to make ‘therapeutic’ texts act as more ‘propositional’ texts. The chapter closes with a look at how Jeremiah 29:11, John 3:16 and Philippians 4:13 perform comparatively in web searches by making use of Google Trends.
