ABSTRACT

The kidney is a conservative organ. In principle, it retains what the body needs and what is not needed is excreted. The fundamental purpose of nephro-urology is the preservation and improvement of renal function. The contribution that renal radionuclide studies make to this goal is increasing through the application of renal ‘stress’ tests: frusemide-induced diuresis is used for the evaluation of outflow disorder, while captopril enhances the determination of functionally significant renovascular disorder. These are in parallel with the developments in renal radiological techniques, which are usually complementary.
