ABSTRACT

In her pioneering exhibition catalogue of 1976, Women Artists 1550–1950, Ann Sutherland Harris rightly indicated that Anna Dorothea Lisiewska-Therbusch, along with her sister, Anna Rosina, deserved to be better known for their artistic contributions. It is hoped that the present translation of Lisiewska-Therbusch's life story will provide further impetus to acknowledging her place in art history. The life story which follows was originally published by the historian Johann Georg Meusel in an issue of one of the first scholarly art periodicals, the Miscellaneen artistischen Inhalts. It is not evident from the life story whether Meusel personally knew Lisiewska-Therbusch or any of her family members; however, the biographer clearly did his research, interweaving empathetic observations about her personal life with a detailed account of her career. Curiously, there is no statement about how her death was received, or what kind of funeral rituals honored her life, as typically would be the case in an artist's life story.
