ABSTRACT

The governor had obeyed the orders from Charcas, and among those who were waiting for Jose de Antequera y Castro on the northern bank of the Tebicuary were Jose Davalos y Peralta and Jose de Urrunaga. The majority of the members of the cabildo, however, ignored these arguments and solemnly recognized Antequera as the legitimate governor of Paraguay until His Majesty should decide otherwise. In Paraguay Antequera became popular not only among the secular population, but also among many of the ecclesiastics in the province. Although Indian scouts were observed on the other side of the Tebicuary River, Antequera did not find any evidence that suggested that Don Diego de los Reyes y Balmaseda and the Jesuits were preparing for an invasion of Paraguay. The activities of Reyes in Corrientes were bothersome to the merchants and shipowners of Asuncion who brought pressure on Antequera to take action.
