ABSTRACT
This paper introduces some of the physical processes influencing the mechanical properties of permafrost and the effect of temperature change in the range 0°C to −10°C. The critical role of saline concentration in the pore fluid is described. Examples of recent CPT investigations at different permafrost sites in Russia are given to highlight the type of data that can be obtained and the interpretation for foundation engineering. Some of the investigations were completed in extremely cold conditions.
