ABSTRACT

This chapter presents some applications of Material Point Method in the field of hydraulic engineering such as dam break flows, Scott Russell's wave generator, the free overfall flow and the scouring of underwater pipelines. The MPM model resembles the one of the granular column collapse with three differences. The MPs represent a piece of water continuum. The boundary conditions are applied to water MPs, and all the contact surfaces are assumed to be frictionless and, hence, a base layer is no longer required. The free overfall occurs where the bottom of a flat channel is discontinued, which is a particular case of hydraulic drop and is described by Chow. Submarine pipelines are considered as the most efficient and safest way to transport gas and oil and are indispensable for the rapid development of the global economy. Point vortex can be viewed as a 2D case of a straight vortex filament of infinite length.
