ABSTRACT

This chapter offers a brief description of the Arab American population, which has become one of the fastest-growing ethnic populations in the United States. It emphasizes that Arab American population shares numerous commonalities, it is an enormously heterogeneous ethnic group. The chapter concerns a brief description of Arab American immigration to the United States. It also describes the educational, economic, and health characteristics of Arab Americans and addresses issues related to Arab American population's religious affiliation, language, and acculturation into the American culture. The chapter discusses negative stereotypes of Arabs and the Arab American family system and cultural traditions. Arab countries were reported to be low in human development measures, such as life expectancy, health care, education quality, income, gender equality, and overall life satisfaction. Arab American families tend to have a focused priority on education and support their children, especially boys, in acquiring it.
